EXAM
A dental exam is a check of the patient’s teeth and gums usually done every 6 months. It is usually performed by a dentist or a dental hygienist. This procedure identifies if the patient has tooth decay, gum disease, weakness in installed crowns, fillings and other dental work, bone or gum recession or bruxism, abnormal bite or TMJ.
Dental Codes:
A dental exam is a check of the patient’s teeth and gums usually done every 6 months. It is usually performed by a dentist or a dental hygienist. This procedure identifies if the patient has tooth decay, gum disease, weakness in installed crowns, fillings and other dental work, bone or gum recession or bruxism, abnormal bite or TMJ.
Dental Codes:
- D0120 – Exam (Periodic oral evaluation – established patient)
- Specifically for established patient (seen by the provider within 3 years)
- This code cannot be used for new patients
- Usually done every 6 months
- D0140 – Limited Oral Exam (Limited Oral Evaluation – Problem Focused)
- This is only for re-evaluation of the existing issues from the previous visits. The provider will directly check only the problems of the last visit
- D0150 – Comprehensive Oral Exam (Comprehensive Oral Evaluation – New or Established Patient)
- This includes a full or extensive dental examination
- This exam sets a baseline of health and also identifies early signs of seious illnesses
- D0180 – Perio Consultation (Comprehensive evaluation of Periodontal Region) – new or established patient
- Used for comprehensive evaluation of periodontal region.
- The following are examined: teeth, plaque, gums, bite, bone structure, risk factors
- D9110 – Emergency Visit
- This procedure can be used to report when a minor procedure is performed to treat discomfort, or pain in a visit
